It was built to ward off tracks from King Kabalega of Bunyoro Kitara and his guerillas. Sir Gerald Portal arrived in Uganda from Zanzibar to formalize the British protectorate of Uganda. Unfortunately he died of malaria a few months after the fort was completed.

The “Mountains of the Moon” (a romantic name for the Rwenzoris) astound visitors with their snow covered peaks and are found on the Equator of all places. Experienced hikers and casual-day hikers will find it a thrilling experience
